Kate Middleton is officially back from holiday break today. She attended her first royal engagement of the year with an appearance at King Henry’s Walk Community Garden in Islington.
The Duchess of Cambridge is slated to meet volunteers at the garden to “hear how the project brings people together through gardening and food growing,” Kensington Palace announced. For today’s outdoor trip, the royal style muse wore a tweed jacket from Dubarry, brown skinny jeans, and combat boots.

The brown, ankle-length boots seem to be a new pair for the duchess, who ditched her usual leather riding boots by Penelope Chilvers for the more industrial-looking pair. Royal style blogs point out this style is from See by Chloé.

Kate may be best known for her ladylike dresses and skirt suits, but she’s not above dressing down in boots and jeans for more casual work events. (In fact, she’s even worn athletic apparel and sneakers for fitting active engagements.)
The Duchess of Cambridge made a similar appearance last year at the Paddington Recreation Ground to visit the Sayers Croft Trust Forest School. For the commitment, her first public work event after maternity leave, she wore a cargo green jacket, Zara jeans, and brown knee-high boots.
Before heading back to work, Kate celebrated her 37th birthday last week. The occasion was pretty laid back, as Prince William had an engagement with Air Ambulance London and Kate brought her kids to school. However, the duchess had a bigger celebration the Sunday prior at her and William’s country home, Anmer Hall, before returning to London. The guests included family and some of Kate’s close friends.

You’ll be able to see Kate in action again tomorrow, as she has an appearance scheduled at the costume department of the Royal Opera House. There, she’ll learn about the department’s use of textiles and meet dancers from the Royal Ballet to discuss their costumes.
Considering the nature of the event, we wouldn’t be surprised if tomorrow’s engagement turns out to be a big fashion moment for Kate. Stay tuned.
