Nostradamus' chilling 'prediction' for King Charles' reign published 500 years ago

Nostradamus, a 16th century philosopher, apparently made eerie predictions about King Charles’ reign hundreds of years before he took the throne.

Nostradamus, who supposedly foresaw events, wrote down 942 predictions for the future and a King was on the list. He published his chilling foresight in a book called Les Prophecies in 1555, which some say included 9/11 and the cost of living crisis. But Nostradamus also wrote down a prediction for King Charles reign, according to followers.

Nostradamus’ chilling prediction for King Charles’ reign

For the royal family in 2024, Nostradamus did have a note for this year, and wrote about King Charles. At the time, he did not know full details about the future – for example did not name King Charles, but wrote ‘King’, and so on.

But he claimed to have a vision.

The book says: “King of the Isles driven out by force… replaced by one who will have no mark of a king”.

Analysis of the passage has since been interpreted to the monarch being a man of divorce – a similarity to Charles. King Charles was first married to Princess Diana before they separated. The couple were officially divorced before Prince William and Harry’s mother died in a car crash in 1997.

He then married the now Queen Consort Camilla in a civil ceremony years later, and the couple have been together ever since.

Expert Mario Reading believes Nostradamus’ prediction for King Charles meant: “Because they disapproved of his divorce, a man who later they considered unworthy; The people will force out the King of the islands; A man will replace who never expected to be king”.

Although it’s an interesting prediction, it was a book written centuries ago, before many people in the future were ever born. There is no science or proven truth behind the prophet’s apparent fortune-telling.

But Nostradamus also ‘predicted’ an abdication for the monarch

Mario Reading, in his 2006 book, Nostradamus: The Complete Prophecies for the Future, claimed he felt it was referring to Prince Harry. Because it argues a man who was not marked to be a King – not in line to the throne directly – would surpass to be King.

As it stands, Harry is fifth in line, behind brother William and his three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Louis. After the Duke of Sussex sits Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, his children, who he shares with Meghan Markle.

Again, it is worth noting the prophecies do not have any specific elements, no names are mentioned nor dates or particular elements to confirm they could be ‘future predictions’.

And the vagueness of the prophecies is what makes them so eerie, apparently.

Dan Jones, a historian, explained: “Nostradamus has the virtue of vagueness combined with apocalyptic fervour. That’s not unusual. Many sayers of sooth, from Merlin and Geoffrey of Monmouth onwards, have done the same.

“This vagueness lends itself to what we now know as confirmation bias. In desperate times, soothsayers have a ready audience for their insane nonsense. It’s the meeting point of cynicism and gullibility.”

Has Nostradamus ever been right?

There are some instances, fans believe Nostradamus’ predictions were right. He apparently foresaw the death of Queen Elizabeth II, and guessed the age of the monarch at the time being “around 96” which she was.

Some supporters agree he predicted the Great Fire of London, Adolf Hitler and both world wars.

Other examples often given include the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as he wrote: “Within two cities there will be scourges the like of which was never seen.”

Then, for the death of President John F. Kennedy, his prophecy apparently read: “From on high, evil will fall on the great man”, with followers convinced the ‘high’ is referring to the sniper shot.
